Music Recording Gear: The Beatles Did “Please Please Me” On a Two Track. You Have It FAR Better!

Well, I’ve said it more than once, and I’m going to say it again (and likely again and again, etc).  Carefully consider your music recording gear, but keep in mind the historical lesson I’m about to teach.  The art of recording your musical masterpieces carries with it a strange dichotomy that I believe is truly “fantastic” (even if you consider it a double-edged sword). Let me explain. Everyday, people spend thousands upon thousands of dollars for either 24, 48, or more multi-track recording devices and, even if they don’t, they’ll spend their money on Protools or Logic software (yes, I love them both but hear me out), only to have to do the training work worthy of a PhD to learn the programs, spend “oodles” of hard-earned money, and then record a piece of worthy music and vocals that didn’t require so much as a fraction of the total power. Just what is it, exactly, that I’ve said again and again (and will continue to preach)? It DOES NOT matter how you went about recording your song. No one can tell how you recorded.

No one can tell which music recording gear you

Music Recording Gear
This article will reveal a key piece of history from one of the biggest acts ever so that you will be convinced that you should be using inexpensive recording gear to make your songs, instead of spending more money than necessary.ou used once it is complete, it is “no one’s business” and, most importantly, it is so much smarter, economical, and less time-consuming to keep it simple by SETTING UP a simple recording console that fulfills your needs as a Songwriter, Performer, or Band.  Plus the average music listener won’t even thing about your music recording gear.  Only professionals will.  And they’ll want to get their hands on it after spending more than they should have on their own.used once it is complete, it is “no one’s business” and, most importantly, it is so much smarter, economical, and less time-consuming to keep it simple by SETTING UP a simple recording console that fulfills your needs as a Songwriter, Performer, or Band.  Plus the average music listener won’t even thing about your music recording gear.  Only professionals will.  And they’ll want to get their hands on it after spending more than they should have on their own.

As an Artist and Performer on many musical levels, I follow a strict (but common sense) set of rules with my own music recording gear. I look for what’s most “popular” in terms of what’s selling, the simplicity of the recording product, the economic factor, and the fact that you can do so much more with the new digital recording consoles (4+ track recorders that burn a CD of your session) than what it is worth to have to rent a larger apartment or take a mortgage out on a larger home in order to set up a lengthy (additional) payment plan for a recording console or expensive form of software and computer equipment that you don’t really need for WHAT you are accomplishing musically. The Beatles did it on a 2-track at times as their musical recording gear.  The Beatles also did it on a 4-track. You have such better and more sophisticated options today than they had (even if you appreciate, as I do, that “mellow” and “warm” former celluloid past that contributed to the magic that was/is their musical legacy). Again, let me explain..

**Below are 2 quick links as examples of two truly inexpensive but entirely complete pieces of music recording gear.

Blue Microphones Yeti USB Microphone – Silver Edition

I’m a big fan of Protools and Logic if you have the computer equipment capable of handling it as the industry standard for music recording gear.  Yet, I define the industry standard by the actual recording, and not the equpment used.  But I must confess that I’m also a big (and sometimes bigger) fan of traditional, yet newly technologically compact and economical recording consoles that you can use with a top-of-the-line (yet again, economical) Blue Microphone to get the job done in a way where I believe people “just can’t know and just wouldn’t care” what the difference was if they even knew how you went about recording your songs. What music lover (as opposed to engineering junkie) would even “know” to ask? Music fans DON’T care and DON’T think about these things. You don’t need to enslave yourself in a self-imposed, impossibly “over-priced” recording school in your own apartment (without the LUXURY of an instructor”) to get a crisp, clean, digitally-perfect sound for your musical blood, sweat, and tears. Go to town with the phrase: “Simplify, Simplify” (Henry David Thoreau) by getting a piece of equipment that is simple but COMPLETELY modern when you use music recording gear.  It technically doesn’t even have to be modern, just as long as it’s a case of “function over form.”  I’ve been around one-too-many lip-syncing, trust fund babies to know that they make themselves far-too-busy taking pictures of their $20,000 studios to make up for their lack of “Soul” and “talent” as genuine “Artists” and “Musicians.” Beat them to the punch, and you’ll beat the S&*t out of them in the process, too, by default, of course. 😉

Getting back to my strict but “common sense” set of rules regarding music recording gear, I want to suggest what is most popular, what is WORKING for talented Songwriters, Artists, and Bands, what is economical, and what is (MOST importantly) pushing people like you FORWARD in your music careers, and pushing you FORWARD FASTER. I have carefully researched some options here. It is my hope and my passion that you consider them. I truly want you to be successful and STAY successful. Let the crowd follow you, and don’t end up (accidentally) following any geeky posers who lack genuine “talent” and “Soul,” but have money that they use to compensate with HORRIFICALLY over-the-top equipment that you DO NOT NEED to create your musical masterpieces. I want you to have “the best,” but I don’t want you to be placed in a quasi-educational engineering school against your will, when all you want and need to do is record your songs. Here are my serious suggestions (in NO particular order in terms of preferences). AMEN.
